Howard County Public School System

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) manages all public schools in Columbia. It is governed by an elected, eight-member Board of Education and oversees 78 schools, including 42 elementary, 20 middle, 13 high, and three special education schools/education centers throughout Howard County. As of September 2024, HCPSS had a total enrollment of 57,565 students.

The school system consistently earns high marks in school performance metrics such as test scores and graduation rates, with high achievement levels across all Maryland School Assessments. HCPSS consistently earns accolades for its high performance, cost-efficiency, and commitment to education, including recognition for its student achievement, transparency, and teacher excellence.

Elementary Schools

Columbia elementary-aged (pre-kindergarten through fifth grade) students go to 19 different Howard County Elementary Schools.

Atholton Elementary School

Open in 1961, Atholton Elementary is one of the county's oldest schools, serving Howard County students well before Columbia existed. It has been renovated multiple times since then, and now serves about 500 students. The outparcel neighborhood of Allview and the northern part of Kings Contrivance feed to Atholton Elementary School. AES is a Certified Maryland Green School.
